4th place at Cheddar Gorge Half Marathon
With it being only a week after the Deloitte Ride Across Britain, which I finished on the 16th June, I wasn’t expecting much of my legs on this very hilly and challenging Cheddar Gorge Half Marathon, organised by Tom Room of Relish Running Races. Indeed, this being the longest run I’ve done since the beginning of May, it might have been a bit ambitious to do this event so soon after 1000 miles of cycling.
However, it was my birthday the following day, so I wanted to see the my last day out as a 35 year old in style. Which, I think I did – ish!
I managed 4th place overall in 1:45:48 – which is a full 11 minutes behind the leader Edward Krudsen, who ran like a whippet! My girlfriend Zayne did brilliantly, coming 3rd lady and 33rd overall in a time of 2:04:08.
In fact, I had a bit of a fight for 4th place, as only 200m from the end, whilst descending down Cheddar Gorge, I heard the pitter patter of not just one set of feet, but two (one of whom was wearing Vibran Five Fingers) – so, whilst the cramp was coursing through my quads, I found myself doing a sprint finish!
