Heroes Ultra (Runner’s World UK)

It’s not every day that I get an urge to run 100 miles across the mountainous spine of Crete, but when there’s a backstory as strong as the Heroes Ultra, it’s hard to refuse. The race follows the route that a hardy band of resistance fighters and SOE agents took during the audacious kidnapping of General Kreipe.

Having recently read Christopher McDougall’s Natural Born Heroes, I was keen to experience first hand what this hardy band of warriors must have gone through.

I was commissioned by Runner’s World to write a 2500-3000 word feature – the result of which you can see on the left.
