Just entered: adidas Thunder Run 2013

‘You’re mad’ were the words my girlfriend used when I told her that I’d entered the adidas Thunder Run on July 27-28, the weekend before we drive to Chamonix to recce the 168km long Tour de Mont Blanc route in preparation for the UTMB next month.

But then, it’s not every day that you’re invited by join Team adidas in a race that you’ve always wanted to do.  So I had no choice but to say ‘yes’!  In any case, it will be fun.

Luckily I’m not doing it on my own, as that might be a bit too much considering all things.  Rather, I’ll be joining a team of 4 other runners who, by the sounds of things, are fairly competitive.  Which means that I might have my work cut out this weekend!

The race starts at 12pm on Saturday 27th July and finishes 24hrs later on Sunday.  As a team, we’ll each take turns to run 10kms on an off-road course.  Having seen the times of last year’s winners – they did 31 laps – which means that I could end up running as much as 60kms – on very little sleep!

The key will be to not go too fast on the first lap.  It’s always easy to start strong, but most people, from the fastest to the slowest, all lost upwards of 8-10 mins per lap by the end.  Which means, I’ll be better off staying at a medium pace of around 43 minutes if we are to potentially ‘win.’

It will also give me a chance to test out my Petzl Nao head torch that I’m thinking of using for the UTMB.  Hopefully it will be up to the job!

Check back here in August for a full write up of the event.
